Technologies of Tenderness -
Exhibition Catalogue

A publication sympathetic to the work of the artist Susan Shantz which provides insight into her thought processes and working practices. Central themes behind the artist’s work were tenderness, nurturing, vulnerability, technology and the medical intervention in the birth of a child. These became the catalyst for the catalogue’s aesthetic. Conceptually and visually, a sterile, clinical structure was developed based on pharmaceutical packaging and medical ephemera. This was wrapped with a dust jacket resembling in a soft, fleshy pink child's sticker sheet. This featured the artist’s drawings to create a 'kiss cut' die which produced self adhesive, repositionable stickers. The stickers could be inserted into the catalogue within allocated spaces. One shape was also die cut into the back cover; the resulting cut out was saved and used as a bookmark. The handmade elements creates a unique and memorable object full of interactive possibilities.

The exhibition was shown at the Medicine Hat Museum & Art Gallery (now Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre).
